Trauma affects how children behave, so when young people have been traumatised by life experiences it is useful to assess the behaviour with an understanding that all behaviour has meaning and reflects needs.
Pain based behaviour includes impulsive outbursts, aggression, running away, self-injury, defiance, inability to regulate emotions, and trauma re-enactment.
It is important in the identification of a young person’s needs to ascertain things like typical base-line behaviours, developmental norms, potential reflection of the family’s world view, whether the behaviour is pain-based and related to a previous trauma, and what feeling the young person may be expressing.
At Mental Health Matters we believe that parents and carers are the “therapist at home”, able to offer the most consistent and informed approach. Our senior clinician works with the parents of children under high school age, rather than the actual child or children themselves. In this way the parents and carers are better supported in their role as informal therapist, achieving identified outcomes in a measurable, effective, and informed manner, while being supported on their own journey.
mediation
A highly skilled and trained mental health clinician can provide counselling and mediation (dispute resolution) to families who find themselves struggling with misunderstandings and conflict. Family mediation is a safe, structured approach that helps all family members to communicate more effectively and restore a balance at home. Assisting families to address their issues safely, without shame or judgement, is a priority at Mental Health Matters Counselling, where those seeking family mediation and positive outcomes within their lives are valued and heard.
